New Penny U.S. Mint Unveils Newest Penny

August 14, 2009: The U.S. Mint this week launched the third 2009 Lincoln bicentennial one-cent coin. The new penny bears a reverse (tails side) design that depicts Abraham Lincoln in front of the State Capitol in Illinois. The first two versions, released earlier this year, featured Lincoln's Kentucky log cabin birthplace and his youth as a rail-splitter. The fourth and final design, due out in November, will depict a half-finished U.S. Capitol dome, symbolizing Lincoln's effort to preserve the Union. Read more at www.usmint.gov/pressroom.
