Examples of Security Breaches of Personal Information

1. Identity Theft Resource Center of Secure Identity Systems, LLC, released a report that estimates more than 79 million records were compromised in the United States from Jan.1st thru Dec. 18, 2007, nearly 4-fold increase from nearly 20 million records in all of '06; or 69 million more than in '04!

2. TJX, the parent company of T.J. Maxx, Marshall's, Home Goods, and other retails, disclosed that more than 94 million credit and debit card numbers had been stolen from its IT systems over an 18-month period. This is the "largest" customer data breach on record so far.

3. Gap Inc.: Social Security numbers and personal data of job applicants --stolen from a laptop third-party contractor, exposing 800,000 applicants to identity theft.

4. Davidson County Tennessee Election Commission, thieves broke into their offices over the Christmas holiday '07, stole a laptop containing names and identifying information of every voter in Nashville, a breach putting roughly 337,000 people at risk of identity theft.

5. Un. of Missouri: A computer hacker accessed Social Security numbers of more than 22,000 current and former students. The database breach was traced to China and Australia.

6. J.C. Penney and 100 other retailers: January 15, 2008: personal information on 650,000+ customers could be compromised after a backup computer tape was discovered missing at their data storage warehouse.

8. Data Broker ChoicePoint sold 150,000+ peoples names, addresses and Social Security numbers to criminals. Some 750 people have been defrauded so far. They opened up 50 accounts and operated undetected for more than a year. They later admitted that the number of compromised files is a rough estimate and they have no way of knowing how many individuals' records were downloaded.

9. Shoe retailer DSW remote break-in of the company's computerized database affected 100,000 +customers of the 103 of the chain's 175 stores.

10. Bank of America lost backup tapes containing financial records of 1.2 million federal employees.

11. Payroll Outsourcer PayMaxx exposed 25,000 + of its customers' payroll records on line.

12. Polo Ralph Lauren Inc. had data stolen of 180,000 GM-branded credit-card cardholders, forcing banks and credit card issuers to notify them, that info may have been exposed.

13. Ameritrade lost backup tape containing account info of 200,000+ clients.

14. Boston College notified 120,000 alumni that addresses and Social Security numbers were compromised, after a computer was hacked by an intruder.

15. Theft of a Un. of California, Berkeley laptop campus computer containing names, social security numbers and other personal info--98,000 graduate students and applicants.
